UN Volunteers is currently recruiting for a National UNV Business Development Expert to expand, extend and enlarge the domestic and non-domestic market and networks for artisan products under UNDP "Integrated Artisan Development Project. The objective of this project in Tibet is to strengthen rural artisan activities through design, non/technical skills intervention so that they are able to participate in non-traditional markets. In selling their products, this project aims to help alleviate poverty and provide long term sustainable development amongst rural Tibetan artisans.


This post is open to Chinese Nationals only.

S/he will be responsible for the following:

1. To work out first a strategic but practical marketing action plan based on a business plan for the marketing of IADP products which was developed by a business consultant in 2003;

2. To assist the establishment of the Tibet Women Artisan Development Association (NGO) under the Tibet Women Federation, and design a managerial structure for the Association to implement the marketing action plan, meanwhile, conduct domestic and international marketing activities specified as follows:

---Domestic Marketing

To work with and assist TWF to coordinate, monitor and promote the sales and merchandising of products with Dropenling Crafts Emporium;
To advise TWF on all issues regarding this venture;
To promote and market IADP products to Government Departments & Bureaus including:
 ,Setting up cost & pricing system
 ,Designing product promotion materials
 ,Meeting various government agencies to introduce to IADP products
 ,Securing orders
 ,Monitoring production and product quality that is consistent with orders placed
 ,Assisting with delivery
 ,Providing after sales service, if necessary (? Does this mean follow up with sales service?)
To help TWF set up retail outlet, if necessary (are we not sure they are going to do this?)

---Non-Domestic Marketing

To identify potential companies nationally and internationally who are interested in IADP products
To promote and market IADP products including:
 ,Setting up cost & pricing system
 ,Designing product promotion materials
 ,Meeting various potential companies to introduce IADP products
 ,Securing orders
 ,Monitoring production and product quality
 ,Assisting in delivery
 ,Providing after sales service, if necessary
To coordinate promotional events, if necessary

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

Strong academic credentials in marketing, business development, and/or other relevant fields
Extensive experience in the marketing field, particularly consumer marketing of artisan products
Good knowledge of retainers, business and interested parties for artisan products
Familiarity with current artisan situation in Tibet, including China and international markets
Knowledgeable in current global design and product market trends
Demonstrated competency in analysis, negotiation and reporting
Able to adapt and work under challenging conditions
Able to work independently as well as be a team player
Strong English language skills; knowledge of Tibetan strongly preferred

Benefits and Entitlements: All National volunteers are given emergency medical, life, and permanent disability insurance benefits. UNVs are also entitled to annual leave calculated at 2.5 working days per month, and sick leave at 7 days within a 12-month period (without a medical certificate).

The following are paid to the National UN Volunteer: travel if moving to a new duty station; a one time settling in grant of 1500 RMB if moving to a new duty station; a volunteer living allowance of 2500 RMB each month; housing is provided free of charge; a one time resettlement allowance of 1500 RMB upon completion of the assignment.
