National UN Volunteers Specialist Information and Technology Coordinator

UN Volunteers currently has two available assignments for an Information and Technology Coordinator with the CISCO Networking Academy Program. The Academy program is a comprehensive, e-learning program, which provides students with the Internet technology skills essential in a global economy. Bringing it to developing countries has allowed their students the same educational opportunities that are currently being offered to students in other countries around the world. This is a program that can assist offering sustainable development and accelerate a country's progression and full integration into the world economy. Launched in 1997, there are now over 10,300 Networking Academies in 151 countries.

This assignment will be located in Chengdu, at the University of Electronic Science and Technology (UESTC) of China or Zhongshan University in Guangzhou. The UNV will be dispatched to an area where the Cisco Networking Academy is already operational. This contract is for one year. S/he will be responsible for the following:

Assistance in the creation of national plans for the Networking Academy Program
, Production of national project plans, in collaboration with UNDP and Cisco, to expand the Academy programs within primary and beyond, to secondary cities
, Consultation and technical support to Governments in developing the policy framework for project implementation and expansion

Broadening the reach of Networking Academy Program in the host countries by fostering public-private partnerships among local NGOs, private firms and academic communities

, Establish contacts with private sector and government ministries to create internship opportunities for Academy program students, as well as links between graduates and potential employees
, Research potential partners at NGOs, private sector, community groups, educational institutions and government offices, establish contact and make presentations on the Academy program and outline possible partnership role that each could play in support of Academy program (such as scholarships, advertising support, equipment costs, etc.)

Outreach to group with restricted access to ICT training
, Ensure program expansion to reach groups that have limited or no access to technical ICT training
, Identification of target groups most in need of ICT training, and development of country-specific strategies for providing most effective opportunities for them
, Implement community strategy for promotion of ICT training and raising awareness about it.
, Identify and address social constraints which negatively affect attendance and performance of female students

Strengthen Networking Academy Program knowledge network
, Facilitate information exchange on best practices and community participation
, Provide Weekly Reports to Cisco team, as well as other ad hoc reports requested, reporting on activities, challenges and successes
, Providing quarterly report to partners in the initiative on the status of Networking Academy Program implementation

Assist in a number of Academy activities
, Support Academy instructors
, Maintain database with details about Academy graduates

The selected candidates must possess the following qualifications:
, A strong background in one or more of the following sectors: IT, development issues, gender and education
, Knowledge and experience of networking technology, preferably as related to the Academy program
, Advanced user-level ICT skills an asset
, Experience in working with multiple partners, and a passion for bringing about change to improve human development in Least Developed Countries (LDCs)
, Previous volunteering experience an advantage
, Strong English language skills preferred

Benefits and Entitlements:
All National volunteers are given emergency medical, life, and permanent disability insurance benefits. UNVs are also entitled to annual leave calculated at 2.5 working days per month, and sick leave at 7 days within a 12-month period (without a medical certificate).

The following are paid to the National UN Volunteer: A one time settling in grant of 2000 RMB if moving to a new duty station; a volunteer living allowance of 2500 RMB each month; a one time resettlement allowance of 2000 RMB. Please note that housing is not provided for this post; it will be the responsibility of the UNV to provide for accommodation.
