The new phase of UNV programme funded by UNDP was started officially in July 2001. It initiates to support Chinese government with the priority in assisting the remote poor area in the west region in order to match the Western Development Initiative.In addition, it focuses on the priorities areas outlined by both UNDP and the Poverty Reduction Plan of the Chinese goverment.

The programme will help a) promote volunteerism and volunteer services in China through establishing favorable national policies and strategies and strengthening promotional activities; b) build national capacity in planning, coordination and management of UNV programme and volunteer activities; and c) provide UNV specialists to support the national effort in reducing disparities.
