The third sector is that particular set of organisations variously called and including NGOs, nonprofits, people's organisations, voluntary associations, voluntary development organisations, civil society organisations, unions, religious organisations and co-operatives.

Papers can address any aspect of these organisations: their governance and management; their relations with governments or with business organisations; their role in social, economic and political development; the legal environment in which they exist; their relationships with giving and volunteering, civic participation and citizenship.

In the recent past two important issues have been in the forefront of discussion among the governments, donor agencies, corporate world, and private citizens.

1. Transnational civil society
2. Third sector in the face of terrorism

The Conference would like to acknowledge the importance of these issues by inviting papers reporting on research on aspects of these two issues and stimulating and sustaining a strong third sector, and secure and fair societies.

¢OTHER CONFERENCE THEMES:
Third sector: definitional issues
Management and accountability of third sector organisations
Accreditation and self-regulation
Social responsibility of third sector organisations
Third sector organisations and community development
Innovations in third sector service delivery
Rural economy and the third sector
Civil society, democratic consolidation, and good governance

Comparative studies are encouraged, as appropriate.

We hope to organise working group meetings on:

A. the challenges of forming and maintaining third sector networks,
B. the skills and issues in undertaking comparative third sector research.

We will have sessions showcasing national and subregional research associations, their activities and accomplishments.

We will also arrange 'display' of local third sector organisations, visits to successful local third sector organisations, and talks by local third sector organisation 'leaders' about their management, governance, challenges, etc.

PROPOSALS SHOULD BE RECEIVED BY 31 MARCH 2003
